🧳 What should I pack?
Beyond the basics (swimsuits, casual outfits, and one nicer outfit for formal night if your cruise line does one), don't forget a few cruise-specific essentials: a small day bag for excursions, a portable phone charger, motion sickness remedies just in case, a lanyard or magnetic holder for your cruise card, and reusable water bottle. Most cruise lines also have restrictions on things like irons, candles, and certain power strips, so it's worth checking your specific line's packing guidelines before you go. And pack a swimsuit in your carry-on — trust me, you'll want it ready for that first pool day even if your luggage doesn't arrive at your cabin right away! 🏊♀️
🎫 What happens on embarkation day?
Embarkation is smoother than most first-timers expect! You'll check in at the terminal (having your documents and boarding pass ready speeds things up big time), go through security, and then board the ship. Your cabin usually isn't ready right when you board, so most cruisers head straight to the buffet or pool deck to kick things off while their luggage is delivered to their room later in the afternoon. It's a great time to explore the ship, grab lunch, and attend the mandatory safety drill before you set sail! ⚓
💵 How does tipping/gratuities work?
Most cruise lines automatically add a daily gratuity charge to your onboard account (usually $16–23 per person, per day) that covers your cabin steward, dining staff, and other behind-the-scenes crew. Sometimes gratuities are prepaid or included as part of a promotion — one more reason I always double check what's included before you book! You can also tip extra for exceptional service or specific staff members, but the automatic daily charge covers the bulk of it, so there's no need to carry around cash for tipping throughout the week. 🙌
🛂 Do I need a passport?
It depends on your itinerary! Some closed-loop cruises (round trip from a U.S. port) only require a government-issued ID and birth certificate, but I always recommend a valid passport regardless — it gives you way more flexibility if there's ever an emergency that requires flying home from a foreign port. 🌊 Will I get seasick?
Most cruisers don't experience much motion at all, especially on today's larger ships which are built with stabilizers to minimize rocking. If you're prone to motion sickness, booking a cabin midship and on a lower deck can help, and over-the-counter remedies or wristbands work well for most people. It's a good thing to plan for, but definitely not something that should keep you from booking your first cruise! 💊
